누군가 내게 ‘이탈리아’나 ‘일본’이라는 말을 하면 내 머리 속은 이미지들로 찬다. 나는 네온불빛 아래 도쿄의 거리를, 혹은 피렌체의 돔형 성당을 떠올린다. ‘세네갈’이라는 낱말을 들으면 그 경제에 관해 읽었던 것이라든가 하는 어떤 연상을 해보지만 떠오르는 이미지는 없다. 미국에서 자랄 때부터 1997년 서울에 오기까지 한국이란 두 번째 부류에 속하는 나라였다. 한국전쟁에 대해 알고 있었고, 서울에서 올림픽이 개최됐다는 것을 기억할 수 있었지만, 머리 속에서 그려낼 수는 없었다. 홍콩은 달랐다. 서울로 떠나기 전 몇달 사이 나는 두편의 영화를 봤다. 왕가위의 <중경삼림>과 피터 그리너웨이의 <필로우 북>이었는데, 이들은 현대 홍콩의 생생한 이미지들을 내게 옮겨심어주었다. 내 머리 속의 이러한 이미지들은 여러 가지로 그 지역에 대해 더 배우고 싶게 했다. 나는 그것들이 얼마만큼 실제 도시를 닮았는지, 얼마만큼 단순히 양식화된 환상인지 궁금했다. 한국에 온 이후 처음으로 떠난 외국 여행은 홍콩으로 가는 것이었다. 그 영화들을 보지 않았더라면 결코 그곳에 가지 않았을지도 모른다.
오늘날 한국영화는 영화제와 DVD를 통해 전세계에 급속하게 퍼지고 있다. 개인적으로는 이러한 점이 많은 외국인들이 한국을 보는 관점에 깊은 영향을 끼칠 수 있을 것이라고 믿는다. 한국영화를 보는 열 사람 가운데 머리 속에 어떤 이미지가 남아, 전에는 그다지 생각해보지 않았던 문화권에 대해 궁금해지는 사람이 한둘 생길 수 있는 것이다.
최근 인터넷에 글을 올려서 해외 한국영화 팬들에게 이와 비슷하게 인상을 남긴 영화들이 있었느냐고 물었다. 가장 많이 언급된 영화는 <고양이를 부탁해>(사진)였다. 보스턴에 있는 한 사람은 “<고양이를 부탁해>를 보기 전까지는 한국에 가야겠다고 느낀 적이 없었다. 그런데 이제는 가보고 싶다”고 말했다. “내게 그림 같은 풍광은 정재은 감독의 도시 풍경만큼 강렬하게 다가오지 않는다.” 이외에 <봄날은 간다> <살인의 추억> 그리고 <나도 아내가 있었으면 좋겠다> 같은 영화들도 언급되었다.
이미지가 얼마만큼 차이를 가져오겠냐 의심하는 사람들에게 친구가 들려준 다음 사실을 전한다. 올해 사상 처음으로, 홍콩에서 일본어보다 한국어를 배우겠다고 신청한 학생 수가 많았다고 한다. 생각해보면 꽤나 놀라운 일인데, 현재 홍콩의 한류 열풍이 없었다면 아마도 일어나지 않았을 일이다.
Images of Korea
When someone says the words "Italy" or "Japan" to me, images fill my head. I see the neon-lit streets of Toyko, or domed cathedrals in Florence. When I hear the word "Senegal," I draw associations -- something I read about its economy, perhaps -- but I see no images.
As I was growing up in the U.S., and right up until I moved to Seoul in 1997, Korea was a country of the second type. I knew about the Korean War, and I remembered that the Olympics had been held in Seoul, but I couldn't picture it in my mind.
Hong Kong was a different story. In the months before I left for Seoul, I saw two films -- Wong Kar-Wai's Chungking Express and Peter Greenaway's The Pillow Book -- that implanted vivid images of modern Hong Kong into my mind. In many ways, these pictures in my head motivated me to learn more about the territory. I was curious how much they resembled the real-life city, and how much was merely stylized fantasy. My first trip abroad after coming to Korea was to Hong Kong. I may never have gone there if I hadn't seen those films.
These days, Korean cinema is spreading rapidly around the world through festival screenings and on DVD. Personally I believe this could have a profound effect on how many foreigners view Korea. For every ten people who watch a Korean film, there may be one or two who are left with an image stuck in their brain, who become curious about a culture that they never thought much about before.
Recently I posted a message on the internet, asking overseas fans of Korean cinema if any movies had left a similar impression on them. Mentioned more than any other film was Take Care of My Cat. "I never felt like I ought to go to Korea before seeing Take Care of My Cat. Now I do," said one person from Boston. "Pretty scenery just isn't as powerful for me as Jeong Jae-eun's urban landscapes." Other films mentioned were One Fine Spring Day, Memories of Murder, and I Wish I Had a Wife, among others.
To people who question how much difference an image can make, I offer up this fact told to me by a friend. This year, for the first time, more students in Hong Kong signed up to study Korean language than Japanese. It's quite amazing when you think about it, and it almost certainly never would have happened without the territory's current craze for Korean movies and music.
