“인간은 에로티시즘에 의해 살아간다”
다음 날이면 애인과 함께 삶을 꾸리기로 한 한 여자가 그 전날 밤 동안 겪게되는 짧은 외도의 이야기를 그려낸 영화라고 하면 관객들로 하여금 큰 흥미를 못 느끼게 할 수도 있을 것 같다. 그러나 클레르 드니 감독은 이 특별할 것도 없는 이야기를 특유의 관능적인 형식미 안에 담아냄으로써 한 편의 아름다운 영화를 만들어냈다. ‘프랑스 영화계가 가장 잘 숨겨둔 보석 같은 존재’라는, 영미권 평자들이 그녀에게 붙여준 별칭은 또 한 번 과언이 아님이 입증되었다. <금요일 밤>의 감독으로서, 그리고 뉴커런츠 부문 심사위원으로서 부산을 찾은 이 뛰어난 프랑스영화계의 시인을 만나보았다.
-<금요일 밤>은 어떻게 만들게 되었는가?
=소설의 원작자인 엠마뉘엘 베르넹과는 전에 함께 일해본 적이 있었다. 그 때 베르넹은 <금요일 밤>이라는 소설을 쓰고 있던 중이었다. 나중에 집필을 마친 베르넹이 내게 자신의 소설을 한 번 읽어보라고 해서 읽어 보았더니 영화를 만들어도 좋을 것 같다는 생각이 들었다. 영화를 찍으면서 오히려 흥미 있는 부분들을 더 많이 찾아냈다. 나는 소설을 되도록 충실하게 영화로 옮기는 게 좋겠다고 생각해 그렇게 하려 노력했다.
-영화 속의 남녀 주인공을 맡은 발레리 르메르시에와 뱅상 랭동은 배우로서는 비교적 평범한 외모를 가진 이들인데, 이들을 캐스팅한 특별한 의도가 있었는가?
=이 영화는 우리 주위의 사람들이 겪음직한 아주 평범하다고 할 수 있는 이야기를 다룬다. 그렇기 때문에 인위적인 느낌을 주는 잘 생긴 배우들이 오히려 불필요했다.
-<금요일 밤>도 그렇지만 당신의 많은 영화들은 형식의 관능미를 보여주는 데 탁월하다고 생각하는데.
=나는 관능미 혹은 관능적인 형식이라는 게 인생의 가장 중요한 부분 가운데 하나라고 생각한다. 인간은 에로티시즘에 이끌리고 그것에 의해 삶을 살아가는 존재가 아닌가?
-뉴 커런츠 부문의 심사위원으로 부산에 온 것인데, 최근의 아시아 영화에 대해서는 어떻게 생각하는가?
=개인적으로 꽤 많은 아시아 영화들을 봤다. 현재 유럽의 영화감독들은 할리우드 감독들처럼 흥행의 포로가 된 경향이 있다. 반면 아시아 여러 나라의 젊은 영화감독들이 만든 풍성한 영화들은 우리에게 ‘자유’라는 걸 가져다줬다고 생각한다. 그들은 다양한 길을 추구하면서 영화가 벌써 죽은 형식이 아니라 아직 살아 있는 것임을 보여주고 있다. 그래서 최근의 아시아 영화가 매우 중요하다고 본다.

Describing as a story about a promiscuous night of a woman, before her move-in with her lover, might not draw much interest from the audience. However, Denis transforms this ordinary story into a beautiful film with her touch of peculiar sensuality. In this film, Claire Denis, who is known among American/UK film critics as “the most well-hidden jewel in French cinema,” definitely proves her extraordinary talent. As a jury for ‘New Currents’ and as a filmmaker, Denis visits Pusan with her latest film .
- What motivated you to make ?
= I once worked with its original writer Emmanuelle Bernheim. At that time, she was working on a novel called . When she was finished, she suggested I should read the novel and after reading it, I decided to make it into a movie. I actually discovered more interesting aspects about the story during its shooting. I believed the story should stay true to its original story and that's what I tried to do.
- Both female and male lead actors have quite ordinary looks. Any special reason behind choosing them?
= The story itself is an ordinary story that could happen to anyone around us. And because of that reason, I thought it would be unfitting to have beautiful actors who might give off sense of artificiality.
- In , as well as your other films, you display a superior form of sensuality.
= I believe ‘beauty of sensuality’, or ‘form of sensuality’, is the most important element in human life. Aren't all humans attracted to eroticism and live by the virtue of eroticism?
