“당신이 아는 사람 중에 그레이스 리라는 이름을 가진 사람이 있나요?” “네” “어떤 사람이죠?" “뭐, 조용하고 똑똑하고 착하고….” <그레이스 리 프로젝트>는 어느 누구에게 물어도 똑같이 묘사되는 ‘수많은 그레이스 리들과는 다른’ 그레이스 리들을 찾아가는 다큐멘터리다. ‘미국에 사는 그레이스 리의 평균’ 따위를 내는 이 다큐멘터리는 궁극적으로 아시아계 미국인 여성이라는 정체성에 대해 이야기하지만 그 태도가 야심차다기보다 유머러스하다. 감독 그레이스 리는 코미디를 좋아한다. 그는 “코미디는 어려운 이슈도 쉽게 풀어낼 수 있는 도구”라며 “나는 내가 보고 싶은 영화를 만들고 싶다”고 말한다.
그의 영화는 <보호장벽>(2002)과 <최고의 부르스트>(2004)에 이어 부산국제영화제에서 세 번째 상영되는 작품이다. <보호장벽>은 여성용 콘돔에 관해 연구하는 여자의 이야기. 한 여성 인터뷰이와 묘한 연대감을 형성하게 되는 과정을 다루고 있다. <사이드웨이>로 국내에도 얼굴을 널리 알린 산드라 오가 출연한 코미디드라마다. <최고의 부르스트>는 카레와 소시지로 만들어진 베를린의 길거리 음식을 소재로 독일안에서 살아가는 아시아계 여성에 관해 이야기하는, 역시 유머러스한 분위기를 지닌 다큐멘터리. 감독은 “소시지 버전의 <그레이스 리 프로젝트>”라며 씩 웃는다.
유쾌한 스토리텔러인 그레이스 리는 뒤늦게 연출을 시작했다. UCLA에서 역사학을 전공한 그는 아시아계 미국인, 특히 한국계 미국이주민 역사에 관심이 많았다고 한다. 이 관심을 바탕으로 자신이 만난 사람들의 이야기를 펜으로 기록하는 저널리스트를 꿈꿨다가, “잘 써내는 재능이 없음을 깨닫고” 이야기를 카메라로 기록하는 감독으로 방향을 바꿨다. 그는 지난해, (또!) 한국계 미국인 여성을 주인공으로 한 장편극영화 <버터 냄새> 프로젝트로 PPP 부산상을 수상했다. 국내영화사 LJ필름이 공동제작할 예정이던 이 영화는 올해 5월 촬영을 시작할 예정이었으나 투자 문제로 무산됐다고 한다. “영화사에서는 끝난 프로젝트지만 나에게는 끝나지 않은 프로젝트”라고 말하는 그의 목소리가 부드럽지만 단호하다.
Grace Lee of <The Grace Lee Project>
“Do you know anyone named Grace Lee?” “Yes” “What is that person like?” “Well, she’s calm, smart, kind…” <Grace Lee Project> is a documentary looking for Grace Lee who is ‘different from all other typical Grace Lees’. Averaging all the Grace Lee living in the States, this documentary eventually discusses the identity of Asian-American women. However, the attitude is humorous rather than ambitious. The director Grace Lee likes comedy. She says, “Comedy is a good way to bring out a heavy issue lightly. I want to make films that I want to watch.”
The documentary is the third to be presented at PIFF after <Barrier Device>(2002) and <Best of the Wurst>(2004). <Barrier Device> is about a woman experimenting on condoms for women and describes how the woman feels sympathy towards one of her interviewees. The film is a comedy drama starring Sandra Oh from <Sideways>. <Best of the Wurst> is another humorous documentary dealing with Asian women living in Germany. They are conveyed through the street foods of Berlin made from curry and sausage. Lee tells it’s the sausage version of the <Grace Lee Project>, then she smiles.
Grace Lee, a pleasant storyteller, had started directing a little late. Having majored in history in UCLA, she has been interested in Asian-Americans, especially the history of Korean immigrants in USA. She was hoping to become a journalist to write about her interest in the subject, however she changed her mind to grab a camera, realizing that she doesn’t have the ‘talents in writing’. Last year, she won the PPP Pusan Award with the feature film <Smells Like Butter>, another story about a Korean-American woman. The film was to be co-produced with LJ Film starting in May this year, however the plan was turned down due to the investment issue. She declares with a soft, but firm voice that she will be continuing with the project although the production company has left it.
