“제가 홍보맨인데요, 뭘” 민병록 집행위원장은 영화제 기간 동안 스탭용 빨간 점퍼를 좀처럼 벗지 않는다. 근사한 정장을 걸친 여타 영화제의 수장들과는 다른 모습이다. 인터뷰가 있던 날도 그는 게스트 숙소가 부족하다는 초청팀의 하소연을 듣고 곧바로 자신의 방을 내줬을 정도. 이쯤되면 영화제 1등 홍보맨 아닌가.
-집행위원장을 맡은지 5년 째다.
=전보다 여유가 좀 생겼다. 우수영화제로 2년 연속 선정됐고, 국고 지원도 늘어났다. 전반적으로 시스템이 안정됐다. 지난해 로카르노국제영화제에서 디지털 삼인삼색 회고전을 열만큼 국제적인 인지도도 몰라보게 높아졌다. 주요 영화제가 열릴 때마다 홍보용 책자를 만드는데 과거와 달리 금방 동이 난다.
-개인적으로 가장 만족스러운 점은.
=4회 때만 해도 관객들이 버거워했다. 프로그램들이 너무 무겁고 어렵다면서. 그런데 지난해부터서 실험영화들을 소개하는 섹션도 매진이 됐다. 지난 3년 동안 관객들과의 거리감을 좁히려고 노력했는데 조금씩 가시적인 성과로 드러나고 있다.
-인디비전과 디지털 스펙트럼 섹션을 통합했다.
=로카르노에 가보니까 상영작의 40% 이상이 모두 디지털이더라. 굳이 디지털을 따로 뗄 필요가 없어졌다. 대신 앞으로는 작지만 개성있는 영화들의 디지털 배급 방안을 적극적으로 모색하려고 한다. 올해 디지털 삼인삼색을 인공위성을 통해 아시아 지역에 송출하는 것도 그런 시도다. 다양한 상영작들을 인더스트리 상영을 통해 소개하고 소중한 작품들이 방송, 케이블, 인터넷 등에서 더 많은 관객들을 만날 수 있도록 기회를 만들려고 애쓰고 있다.
-곧 영화제도 열돌을 맞는다.
=예산 등이 확보되면 인력 투자를 늘리려고 한다. 부산국제영화제의 성공은 전문화된 인력들이 꾸준히 영화제를 운영해왔다는 점이다. 인연으로 마냥 사람들을 붙잡아 둘 수는 없다. 요즘 우리 프로그래머들에게 손을 뻗치는 곳도 있다더라.(웃음) 스탭들이 최대한의 능력을 발휘할 수 있는 환경을 조성해주기 위해 애쓸 것이다.
-올해 상영작 중 추천하고 싶은 작품은.
=이리 멘젤. 감독 되겠다며 뉴욕에서 유학할 때 <가까이서 본 기차>를 보고 홀딱 반했다. 올해 심사위원으로 모시게 됐는데 벌써부터 설레인다.
Min Byung-lock Festival Director Interview
I met Min Byung-lock, the Festival Director on the 25th, the day before the opening. He was busy from preparing accommodation for the guests to miscellaneous services for the film festival.
-This is your fifth year of being the Festival Director.
=Compared to the past, I am glad to say that we have our heads above the water. It has been promoted as an excellent film festival for two consecutive years, and the national coffer aid has increased. Generally, the system has stabilized. International recognition has increased enough to hold a ‘Jeonju Digital Project’ retrospective exhibition last year.
-What is most satisfying, personally?
=Up until the 4th, the audience couldn't manage it because the programs were too heavy and difficult. However, since last year, even the section introducing experimental films was sold out. For the last three years, we have tried to reduce the distance between the audience and the festival, and the visible outcome is now revealing.
-The Indie Vision and the Digital Spectrum section have united.
=More than 40% of the films at the Locarno were digital. It is no use having a separate digital section. From now on, we are actively searching for the distribution of small but characteristic digital films. This year, ‘Jeonju Digital Project’was read out by satellite throughout the Asian region precisely because of this reason. To meet with more audience on air, cable, and the Internet, we are concentrating on the Industry showing as well.
-What do you recommend to watch this year?
=Jiri Menzel. When I was pursing my studies to become a director in New York, I was totally taken by <Closely Watched Trains>. I am already thrilled since we invited him as a judge this year.
