“정말 되겠냐고 말하는 사람들이 있었다. 하지만 시나리오 단계에서 포스트 프로덕션까지 전주에서 모든 것이 가능하다는 걸 보여주고 싶었다” 전주국제영화제 개막작 <오프로드>를 연출한 한승룡 감독의 말이다. <오프로드>는 영화진흥위원회와 전라북도가 공동 지원하고 NCN(New Cinema Network)이 함께 기획한 2005년 저예산영화 제작지원 사업 선정작 중 한 편이다. 10편 중 1편으로 책정되어 있는 전라북도 쿼터 선정작이다. “처음에는 걱정들을 했지만 지금은 ‘전라북도 영화 제1호’가 완성 됐다는 것에 가능성을 두고 기대들을 많이 한다”고 한승룡 감독은 전한다. 지역 영화에 대한 인식 전환과 지역 내 인력 인프라 구축의 선례 만들기가 이 영화의 목표였다. 그래서 전주지역 출신의 인력을 적극 가동하고 각 파트 막내들을 전주영화제 학생들로 배치하기도 했다. 촬영도 한 장면을 제외하면 모두 전북 내에서 하면서 많은 효과를 얻었다. “가령 각 파트 막내들을 전주영화제 학생들로 하는 것에 기존의 팀원들이 처음에는 좀 꺼려하더니 지금은 일 잘한다고 다른 영화 촬영장에도 데리고 갈 정도다”. 전북 지역 영화의 좋은 선례를 만든 것이다.
<성냥팔이 소녀의 재림>, <스캔들-조선남녀상열지사> 등 비교적 큰 영화들의 공동편집을 맡은 경험이 있는 한승룡 감독은 저예산 제작의 모범을 배우기 위해 “김기덕 감독의 영화, 누리 빌게 세일란의 <우작> 메이킹 다큐 등을 보았고, 컷과 장소 이동을 줄이고 게릴라식으로 찍는” 걸 익혔다. 한편, <오프로드>는 한승룡 감독이 2000년에 자신의 영상원 졸업영화로 만들었던 <오프 더 로드>라는 단편을 확장한 것이다. “후배의 시나리오를 읽고 마음에 들어 그 시나리오 중 한 장면만 가져와 만든 것이 <오프 더 로드>다. <오프로드>에서 주인공 상훈이 차 안 라디오에서 애인 소식을 듣는 장면이다. <오프로드>에서 그 장면은 원작 시나리오와 달리 엔딩에 들어갔다. 결국 오프 로드로 간 인물은 온 로드로 오기 힘들다는 느낌을 주고 싶었다”. 아마 한승룡 감독의 다음 영화 역시 전북 영화가 될 것 같다. 그는 지금 서울에서 정읍으로 내려와 소동에 휘말린 한 공무원의 이야기를 준비중이다. 그의 전라북도 제2호 영화를 보게 될 날도 멀지 않은 것 같다.
<Off Road> Director Han Seung-ryong
“Some people questioned its prospect. However, from the early stages of writing the scenario to post production, here in Jeonju I wanted to prove that everything is possible.” These are the words of director Han Seung-ryong who produced <Off Road>, the Jeonju International Film Festival opening film. <Off Road> is one of selected works of the low-budget pictures. This production aid business was co-aided by Film Promotion Committee and Jeollabuk-do, and NCN(New Cinema Network) collaborated with them in 2005. The aims of this film were to divert the perception of regional films and to establish a precedent of a human resource infra construction within the region. Therefore, Jeonju-origin human resource was at full work and the youngest workers in each part were stationed to JIFF students. All except one shooting was done within Jeollabuk-do area. A lot was gained. A good precedent of a Jeollabuk-do region film was made.
Director Han Seung-ryong has experience in co-editing comparatively major films such as <Resurrection Of The Little Match Girl>, <Untold Scandal>. And to learn the exemplar of a low-budget picture production he “watched movies made by director Kim Ki-duk, and Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s making of <Distant>.” He also learned that it was better to reduce cuts and movement of locations and shoot using guerrilla tactics. Meanwhile <Off Road> is the expansion of the short piece <Off the Road> which Director Han made in year 2000 when he graduated from The Korean National University of Arts, School of Film, TV & Multimedia. “<Off the Road> was created when I read a junior colleague’s scenario, and picked out a scene from that. This scene is the moment in <Off Road> when the hero Sang-hoon is in the car and hears the news about his girlfriend on the radio. Different from the original scenario, that scene from <Off Road> is the ending. This was to show that in the end, characters that have gone ‘off road’ are hard to come back ‘on road’. Han is now preparing his second Jeollabuk-do film.
