당연하다. 민병록 집행위원장의 휴대폰은 쉴 틈이 없다. 인터뷰 내내 전화벨이 울리지만 그래도 그는 귀찮지가 않다. 이유가 있다. “작년보다 반응이 더 좋은 걸 느끼니까 힘들지도 않고 기쁘다. 작년 이맘때쯤에는 50여 편이 매진이었는데 올해는 벌써 80여 편이 매진이다. 월요일 연휴까지 끼어 있어 그런가보다”며 싱글벙글이다. 그에게 올해 영화제가 주력한 변화와 시도를 물었다.
-올해의 큰 변화는 ‘인디비전: 국제경쟁’ 섹션 명을 ‘국제경쟁’으로 바꾼 것이다.
=이름만 바꾼 게 아니라 의의가 더해졌다. 저예산 독립영화만으로 생각하는 개념을 벗어나서 재능 있는 신인들의 작품을 더 많이, 다양하게 포괄하기 위해서다. 시상제도도 바꾸었다. 원래는 최우수상만 있었지만, 심사위원 특별상을 올해 추가했고, 내년에는 감독상 수상 신설도 고려중이다. 상금도 대폭 향상할 것이다.
-관객 서비스 면에서는 어떤가
=전주 지역 문화예술단체들과 연계하여 영화제 기간 중 공동 행사를 많이 연다. 영화제에서 영화도 보고 다양한 축제도 함께 향유할 수 있도록 말이다. 왜 음식도 매일 콩나물국밥만 먹으면 좀 지겹지 않나. 올해는 한정식으로 영화의 반찬을 준비했으니 숟가락만 들고 와서 드시라는 뜻이다(웃음). 또 전북 삼성 문화회관 1500석을 포함하여 객석도 15퍼센트 확대했다. 영화의 거리에 있는 극장도 좀 늘렸고. 내년에도 객석을 올해 대비 20퍼센트 정도 더 늘일 계획이다.
-문광부가 실시하는 국제영화제 대상 평가에서 좋은 점수를 받지 못한 항목이 있다. 내실 있는 영화제로서는 할 말이 있을 것 같다
=전주영화제가 뒤처진다는 관객의 만족도란 관객이 많을수록 떨어질 수밖에 없다. 근접성이 떨어진다는 평가도 있었는데 극장 밀집도에 있어 전주만한 곳은 많지 않다. 어쨌든, 전체 평가를 종합해 보면 좋은 점수를 받았기 때문에, 올해도 우리는 6억 5천을 지원 받았다.
-내년은 10회째다. 비장의 프로젝트가 있나
=영화 한 편을 자체 제작중이다. 내년 개막작으로 생각 하고 있다. 특별 프로젝트이니 이정도만 말해 두자.
-한 명의 관객으로서 이 번 상영작 중 놓치고 싶지 않은 단 한 편의 영화가 있다면.
=9시간짜리 <엔칸토에서의 죽음>. 이거 한 번 보고 나면 어디 가서 영화를 말할 때 평생 발언권이 있을 거다. 너 이거 봤어? 이러면, 다 쓰러지는 거지, 뭐(웃음)
The Festival Director, Min Byung-lock’s cell phone was never silent. During the interview, his cell phone kept ringing but he didn't feel bothered. Here's the reason. "Because I feel this year is better than last year. Last year, about 50 films were sold out, but this year over 80 films! Partly because of the holiday during the festival" he said with smile. Here are his answers about changes and new attempts for this year.
-The biggest change would be changing the section title from the “Indie Vision: International Competition” into the “International Competition.”
=Not only the title but the significance. It is to cover young, talented directors’ films as broadly as possible. The awarding system is also changed. We added the Special Jury Prize this year, and expect to add the Director’s Prize next year. The prize money will be raised hugely, too.
-How about services for visitors?
=We hold many events along with local artistic and cultural groups in Jeonju in order to entertain the visitors with various cultural experiences. It’s like a buffet so all you need is a spoon! We also expanded theatres and seats this year. There will be more seats next year.
-There are some categories rated low for international film festivals operated by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. You may want to talk about that.
=The more visitors, the more complaints. Anyway, we’ve got a good grade in total. So we were sponsored 650 million won this year.
-Next year will be the 10th festival. Anything special you plan?
=We’re expecting a feature financed by ourselves considering it for the next opening ceremony.
-As an audience, do you have any film you don’t really want to miss?
=It’s “Death in the Land of Enchantos” by Lav Diaz. Its running time is 540 minutes If I don't see it, how dare I say I'm a movie bug!
