홍건표 씨 지난 2004년 여름에 당신을 만났을 때는, 당신이 영화제를 이런 충격적이고 돌연한 결말로 영화제를 이끌 의도를 갖고 있었다고는 짐작도 못했습니다. 집행위원장 김홍준과 세 명의 뛰어난 프로그래머들을 해고했다는 소식을 들었습니다. 당신이 만약 그들 없이 올 여름에도 이 행사를 개최하려 한다면 그건 말도 안되는 생각이라고 난 확신합니다. 저는 부천시가 갖고 있는 흥미롭고 야심찬 한국의 '신도시'로서의 면모에 늘 놀랐습니다. 특히 의욕적인 문화 프로그램이 그렇습니다. 그것의 가장 핵심 부분이 부천영화제입니다. 부천영화제는 놀라운 문화적 자원을 부천시민들에게 공급했을 뿐 아니라 서울서 찾아온 수백명의 서울시민들과 그 열배도 넘는 세계인들을 매료시켰습니다. 부천이 국제적인 위상을 가질 수 있었던 것도 무엇보다 부천영화제 때문이었던 겁니다. 대체 무슨 동기로 그런 업적들을 내던져버릴 생각을 하는 건지 알 수가 없습니다만, 당신이 대단히 큰 실수를 한 것만은 분명하다고 강하게 말씀드리고 싶군요.
Mr Hong Geon-Pyo: When I met you at the PiFan Festival in the summer of 2004, there was no suggestion that you intended to bring the festival to a shockingly abrupt end. I have just heard the news that you have fired Mr Kim Hong-Joon from his post as festival director, and the three excellent programmers from their jobs too. If you try to hold a festival in Bucheon this summer without them, I'm certain it will be a bad joke. Bucheon always struck me as the most interesting and ambitious of Korea's "new towns", mostly because of its ambitious cultural programme. The PiFan Festival was obviously a key part of this. It not only provided a wonderful cultural resource for the people of Bucheon but also attracted hundreds of visitors from Seoul and dozens more from the wider world. It did more to give the city of Bucheon an international profile than any other event. I can't imagine what might be your motive for throwing these achievements away, but I'd like to register my strong feeling that you have made a big mistake.

크레타(김도혜)에게 PiFan이 더이상 존재하지 않는다는 소식을 듣고 정말 슬펐습니다. 그런 영화제가 문을 닫는다는 건 비극입니다. 내가 할 수 있는 일이 있다면 하고 싶군요. 그리고 2004년 영화제 카달로그에서 실린 에이모스 보겔 회고전에 대한 자세한 사항을 제 이메일로 보내줄 수 있으면 고맙겠습니다. 보겔 영화의 홍보용으로 사용할 뿐 아니라 PiFan이 작년에 얼마나 훌륭한 일을 했는지도 보여줄 수 있을 것 같습니다. 부천영화제가 더이상 있을 수 없다니, 얼마나 가혹한지 모르겠습니다.
Dear Creta I was very saddened to hear that PiFan is no more. It is a tragedy that a festival like yours has been closed down. I would like to do what I can, and wonder if you might be able to email me those pages from your 2004 catalogue that detail the Amos Vogel retrospective (pp 186-194) I would be able to use them not only as publicity for the Vogel film, but also to show just what an excellent job PiFan did last year, and how terrible it is that there will not be any more festivals.
김영덕, 김도혜, 손소영에게, 믿을 수가 없는 일입니다. 한국에서 무슨 일이 있었던 거죠? 부천국제판타스틱영화제는 이미 자기만의 방식과 스타일을 확립했습니다. 우리 일본사람들도 당신들의 젊고 훌륭한 관객들만큼 부천영화제를 잘 알고 존경합니다. 전주영화제 (프로그래머인 정)수완씨가 지난 주 도쿄에 왔을 때 영화제에 대한 소식을 듣고 너무 놀랐습니다. 늘 그랬던 것처럼 이번에도 곧 베를린에서 만나 새해인사도 나누고 새 영화에 대한 얘기도 해야하는 건데. 좋은 영화제는 좋은 프로그래머와 영화제의 조직구성을 잘 아는 사람들을 필요로 합니다. 게다가 영화제는 며칠 하고 마는 불꽃놀이가 아니잖아요. 여러분이 몇년 동안을 영화와 감독들에게 지지를 보내왔다는 것을 알고 있습니다. 영화계 전문인력들간의 세계적인 네트워크와 인간관계가 없으면 진정한 영화제를 이끌어간다는 건 불가능하죠. 그 일을 당신들은 지난 수년간 정말 잘해왔습니다. 일본 영화인의 한 사람으로서 나느 부천 음식엔 전혀 관심이 없습니다. 당신들이 엄선한 영화가 아니면 부천에 갈 이유가 없죠. 모든 영화제들이 저마다 예산 및 정부 지원 등에 있어 문제를 안고 갑니다. 우리 도쿄필름엑스도 그런 갈등이 있고요. 하지만 최소한 "당신들"만은 최고의 프로그래머 팀이자 PiFan이 지금의 세계적인 호평을 듣게 한 주역들이라는 점을 말하고 싶습니다. 김영덕, 김도혜, 손소영 씨, 당신들의 지식과 기량과 전문적인 네트워크가 효과적으로 활용될 곳이 한국 어디엔가 있다고 저는 믿습니다. 그 곳이 일본일 수도 있고요. 일본어만 잘한다면야. 김영덕 씨는 일본어도 잘하시던데. 계속 연락하고 지내도록 해요. 당신들이 어디에 있든 우리는 지금까지와 마찬가지로 앞으로도 당신들을 지지할 준비가 돼 있습니다. 아마도 곧, 영화제를 진정으로 이해하는 정치인이 있는 도시에서 당신들에게 영화제를 구성해달라고 부탁하게 될 겁니다. 내가 여러분께 뭘 해드릴 수 있을지 몰라, 지금 떠오르는 말을 빨리 적어 보냅니다.
Dearest Ellen, Creta and Michelle, It is unbelievable indeed. What's happened in Korea? Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival is already esta blished its own way and style. We Japanese also know and admire your festival as your young and good audience!!do. I just heard on this matter from Soo-wan-san of Jeonju F.F. when she came to Tokyo last week and was so surprised. It is for me the usual and normal way to meet all of you in Berlin soon and say Happy New Year-additionally talk about new films as ever. Rea l good film festival needs the good programmer and the person who knows about organization of international film festival. Moreover the film festival is not only a event like a firework of several days. We know you are continuing to support films and filmmakers through the years. Without worldwide networks and human relationship between cinema professionals, it is impossible to carry on a real film festival. You have been done good work for many years. As one of a Japanese film professional, we don't have any interest in Puchon food fair at all. No reason to attend Puchon event anymore without your selective good films. Every film festivals always holds some problems about budget and the support from the government or city etc. We TOKYO FILMeX also has the struggles I have to say. However, at least I can say YOU are the best team as programmers and YOU are the very person indeed to keep good reputation of PIFAN from all over the world. Dear Ellen, Creta and Michelle, I do believe there's a place where your knowledge, skill and professional network can be effectively used and needed somewhere in Korea. Or maybe also in Japan, if you speak Japanese like native speaker, though Ellen's Japanese is quite nice. Please do keep in touch with us. We are ready to support you wherever you are, as ever. Needless to say, I agree as well. This decision is shocking, artless and infuriating. How could this possibly happen - and in such an unreasonable way? We at FanTasia will certainly write a letter in support, and I will try to get other cultural institutions and journalists to help as well. Now that the Screen article has come out, I imagine it will be even harder to pressure the mayor to reconsider his savage decision, but we should all try just the same. How much history is this maniac willing to throw away?

Dear all, I suggest that the EFFFF make an official protesting and supporting letter and that each festival make it own letter as well. In Switzerland we will try to associate some national festivals, film institution and personality to our letter. I suggest that each member do so, as cultural institutions we should be all concerned. All the best to you all, We are ready to do whatever we can to support your action. Please advise us about the way to be as effective as possible. We will in any case send a letter to the mayor to express our feelings about this abberation!

Dear friends, with sadness in my heart I hear of the current situation at your festival. Throught its relatively short history Pifan Film Festival has managed to profile & establish itself as one of the festivals of real importance. It is sad to hear that this work has all been in vain. I truely hope that the festival crew, it's director and the three programmers, whom I consider real good friends, will be given the opportunity to continue their work with the same enthusiasm else where there are people who know to appreciate their true love for the other cinema.
