10월13일 오후 1시부터 메가박스 1관에서 고 신상옥 감독의 1962년작 <열녀문> 복원판 상영과 특별대담이 열렸다. 꽉 들어찬 객석에는 이 영화의 주인공인 최은희, 신영균 씨를 비롯해 30여명의 원로영화인이 자리해 의미를 더했다. 상영 뒤 열린 특별대담에서는 최은희, 신영균 씨와 영화평론가 김소영 씨가 참석해 이 영화와 관련된 일화와 역사적 의미에 관해 설명했다. 최은희 씨는 “이 영화를 다시 못 볼 것이라고 생각했는데 이렇게 접하게 되니 잃어버린 자식을 찾은 심정”이라고 말한 뒤 “남편인 신상옥 감독님이 이 영화를 다시 보시지 못하고 떠나셨다”고 말하며 눈물을 보여 객석을 숙연하게 만들었다. 이어서 그는 “독일에도 2차 대전 이후 과부가 많아졌는데, 그들은 과부들의 이야기인 이 영화를 보면서 많은 눈물을 흘렸다”면서 <열녀문>이 베를린영화제에 진출했을 당시의 일화도 소개했다. 신영균 씨는 <열녀문>과의 각별한 인연을 들려줬다. 이 영화는 황순원의 소설 <과부>를 원작으로 하는데, 그는 이 소설을 원작삼아 1960년 영화화된 조긍하 감독의 <과부>를 통해 영화계에 데뷔했다. 그리고 2년 뒤 만들어진 <열녀문>에서도 <과부>에서와 마찬가지로 머슴 성칠이 역을 맡았던 것. 그는 “연극 연기의 습관이 남아 <과부> 때는 오버액션을 했는데 <열녀문>에서는 쉽게 영화 연기에 적응할 수 있었다”고 말했다. 한편, 이날 오후 4시30분에는 파라다이스호텔 카프리룸에서 <열녀문> 발굴을 기념하는 리셉션이 열렸다.
<The Arch of Chastity> is Seen Anew
At 1:00 p.m. on October 13th, The Megabox Theater was the site for a packed screening of a restored copy of late director Shin Sang-ok’s 1962 film <The Arch of Chastity>, followed by a special colloqium. The attendance of some 30 elder performers, including cast members Choi Eunhee and Shin Yeong-gyun, brought an added meaning. They were joined by film critic Kim Soyoung in the colloquium, offering anecdotes and explanations of the film’s historical significance. After Choi noted, “I thought I’d never see this again. Meeting up like this, I feel like I’ve found a lost child”, the crowd grew silent as she cried. “The director, my dear husband Shin Sang-ok, died before he could see it again.” She noted that the film was also screened in Berlin, offering that “After World War II, Germany had its fair share of widows, and when they saw the film, they wept too.” Shin Yeong-gyun offered a story about his unique relationship with the film. His acting debut came in Jo Keung-ha’s 1960 film <The Widow>, which was also based on Hwang Sun-won’s short story, <A Widow>. Two years later, he was again cast as farmhand Seong-chil. “In <The Widow>, I overacted, because of my habits as a stage performer, but here I was able to adapt to film.” At 4:30 p.m., a reception at the Paradise Hotel commemorated the restoration of this film.’
