어제 저녁의 개막은 충분히 흥미로웠다. 개막식과 밝은 불빛, 레드 카펫와 군청색 슈트들. 하지만 이제야 진짜 영화제가 시작된다. 부천영화제에서 보고 싶은 영화를 모조리 챙겨보는 건 아주 힘든 일이지만, 특히나 첫주에는 더욱 어렵다. 어쨌거나, 올해에 챙겨볼 만한 영화들에 대해 추천을 좀 한다면, 자 여기에 나의 선택들이 있다.
나는 데이브 매킨의 <미러마스크>를 보기 위해 일년을 간절히 기다려왔다. 매킨은 디지털 포토그래피와 특수효과를 독학한 귀재이며 코믹북 아트로 꽤 유명세를 탄 인물이다. 시각적으로 호화스러운 <미러마스크>는 500만달러 이하로 만든 작품으로, 좋은 특수효과에는 높은 비용이 든다고 생각하는 이들을 향한 통쾌한 응답이다. 독립영화 감독 할 하틀리의 최근작 <페이 그림>은 예전 스타일과는 조금 다른 듯도 하지만 그의 작품들은 언제나 볼 만하다.
<크리스토퍼 도일의 화양연화>는 저명한 촬영감독 크리스토퍼 도일의 광기와 천재성을 지켜보는 것만으로도 즐거운 시간을 보낼 수 있다. 어떤 이유에선지, 올해는 성난 동물들의 해다. <새>는 살인마 까마귀 이야기이고, <블랙 쉽>에는 살인적인 양떼가 등장하고, <폴트리가이스트>는 좀비닭이 나오는 아주 황당하고 주책 맞은 영화다.
개인적으로는, 한해 두해 지날수록 옛날 영화와 회고전에 더욱 매력을 느끼게 된다. 특히 1960년대 한국영화의 에너지와 창의성은 정말로 뛰어났다. 올해 부천영화제는 4편의 흥미로운 이봉래 감독의 작품을 상영한다. 운송회사에서 일어나는 말다툼과 뒷이야기를 다룬 <삼등과장>은 무척 흥미로워 보인다. 삶의 고단함을 극복하지 못하는 전형적인 한국 여자의 삶을 다루는 <육체의 문>은 살짝 꼬인 신파적 재미를 제공할 듯싶다.
해외에서 초청된 고전들도 꽤나 즐거움을 선사할 것 같다. 리차드 플레이셔의 영화 4편은 모조리 SF 장르의 고전이며, 프랑스 SF 특별전의 작품들도 하나같이 훌륭하다. 특히, 크리스 마커의 <환송대>는 영화 역사상 지금까지 만들어진 가장 아름다운 영화 중 하나다. 이 영화들은 그냥 나의 선택일 뿐이니, 완전히 다른 선택을 하는 데 주저하지 말기를 바란다.
Looking at This Year's Films
Okay, last night's opening was fun enough. Opening ceremonies, the bright lights, the red carpet, the dark blue suits. But now the real film festival begins. The real challenge, especially in the opening days of PiFan, is just getting in to the movies you want to see.
Anyhow, if I may share a few personal suggestions about what to catch this year, here are some of my picks. I have been waiting eagerly for a year to see Dave McKean's <Mirrormask>. McKean is a self-taught wizard of digital photography and special effect who gained fame for his comic book art. Made for less than $5 million, <Mirrormask> is a visual spectacular and a great response to anyone who says that great special effects are too expensive. Independent filmmaker Hal Hartely is always worth seeing, although it sounds like his most recent film, <Fay Grimm> is something different from his usual style.
<In the Mood for Doyle> could be an amusing look at the madness and brilliance of the world's most celebrated cinematographer, Christopher Doyle. For some reason, this is a big year for angry animals. <Kaw> is the story of killer crows, <Black Sheep> features homicidal sheep and <Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead> is the supremely silly tale of zombie chickens.
Personally, as each year goes by, I find myself increasingly attracted to the old films and retrospectives. For Korean filmmakers in particular, the energy and creativity of the 1960s is often outstanding. This year PiFan presents four films by Lee Bong-rae, each of which looks interesting in its own way. <A Petty Middle Manager>, with its tale of gossip and political bickering at a transport company, looks like it could be quite fun. And <The Door of the Body>, the story of one of those quintessentially sweet Korean women who the miseries of life cannot overcome, also has the potential for more than a little twisted, melodramatic fun.
The old foreign films are pretty fun this year, too. All four Richard Fleischer movies are science-fiction classics. And the old French science fiction movies are all excellent. In particular, Chris Marker's <La Jetee> is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Anyhow, those are just my pick. Feel free to fall in love with a totally different selection.
